GOKYO RENJO LA PASS TREK 8 DAYS

The 8 days  Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is one of the most challenging yet rewarding treks in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek offers a unique opportunity to explore the majestic Himalayan landscapes while navigating through difficult terrain. Situated at an elevation of 5,360 meters (17,590 feet), Renjo La Pass stands as the primary highlight of this trek, and crossing it requires both physical endurance and mental determination.

The trek begins from the bustling town of Lukla and takes trekkers through Sherpa villages, lush forests, and along the Dudh Koshi River. As you ascend, you will experience dramatic changes in the scenery, from verdant valleys to rugged alpine terrain. The trek includes iconic stops like Namche Bazaar, where trekkers acclimatize and enjoy stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

Gokyo Lake, another focal point of the trek, is a serene glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The turquoise waters of Gokyo Lake, paired with the dramatic backdrop, create a tranquil atmosphere for rest before embarking on the Renjo La Pass crossing. The challenging ascent to the pass involves steep and rocky trails, and the high altitude can make it difficult to breathe. However, the breathtaking panoramic views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu from the summit of Renjo La are worth the effort.

Due to the strenuous nature of the trek, good physical fitness and proper acclimatization are crucial. The trek demands preparation for its rugged conditions and unpredictable weather. However, for experienced trekkers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Everest region, the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime journey.

ITINERARY

Expand All

Your adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain airport in the Khumbu region. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guide and porters, then begin the trek to Phakding. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, passing through Sherpa villages and lush forests. The walk is relatively easy, allowing you to acclimatize and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Once in Phakding, you’ll rest and prepare for the more challenging days ahead.

Today, you’ll trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to the Everest region. The trail ascends steadily, crossing several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. You’ll pass through pine forests, past monasteries, and villages like Monjo before reaching the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. After passing through the park gate, the final stretch takes you to Namche, a bustling Sherpa town perched on a hill. It’s a perfect place to rest and acclimatize for the higher altitudes.

On Day 3, you’ll continue your ascent, leaving Namche Bazaar and heading toward Dole. The trail takes you through forests of juniper and rhododendron, offering stunning views of Everest and Lhotse along the way. The path climbs steadily, passing through small Sherpa settlements. You’ll feel the altitude as you get closer to Dole, but the surrounding mountain scenery will keep you motivated. After reaching Dole, you can relax and acclimatize for the next day’s trek.

Today’s trek is one of the most exciting, as you ascend to Gokyo, a small village by the serene Gokyo Lakes. The trail takes you through the Ngozumpa Glacier, offering dramatic views of the surrounding peaks. As you approach Gokyo, the turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes create a stunning backdrop. You’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, including Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Everest. Once you arrive in Gokyo, take time to rest and take in the beauty of your surroundings.

On Day 5, you’ll embark on a hike to the summit of Gokyo Ri, a popular viewpoint that offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Himalayas. From the top of Gokyo Ri, you’ll be able to see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, as well as the stunning Gokyo Lakes below. After soaking in the views, you’ll descend back to Gokyo for the night, where you can relax and acclimatize before crossing the Renjo La Pass.

Today is one of the most challenging days of the trek, as you cross the Renjo La Pass. Starting early, you’ll begin your ascent to the pass, which sits at an elevation of 5,360 meters (17,590 feet). The climb is steep and demanding, but the view from the top is awe-inspiring, with panoramic vistas of the Everest massif, including Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. After taking in the views, you’ll descend toward Thame, a picturesque Sherpa village nestled in a valley. The descent can be long, but the stunning scenery makes it worthwhile.

On the final trekking day, you’ll descend to Lukla, retracing your steps through the Dudh Koshi River valley. The trail takes you through dense forests, past villages, and suspension bridges as you make your way back down to the lower altitudes. The last day of trekking is long, but you’ll be rewarded with a sense of accomplishment and a chance to reflect on your incredible journey. Once you arrive in Lukla, you can celebrate with your team and relax before the flight back to Kathmandu.

After a memorable trek, you’ll take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu from Lukla. The flight offers a final opportunity to enjoy the spectacular mountain views. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel to rest and enjoy some free time in the city, reflecting on the incredible adventure you’ve just completed.

My brother and I had a great trip to the Everest Base Camp. Together with Santa our very well informed gide, who took care of us in a fantastic way and gave us much information during the hike, and Gulzen our porter (who carried each day our two bags of 10kg each plus his own bag....unbelievable). We had a wonderful time in the beautiful Himalayas, it was a lifetime experience!

The Everest Three Pass Trek is hands-down the most beautiful and challenging trek I’ve ever done, and it was made unforgettable by our amazing guide, Pem Dorje Sherpa, from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking. Pem Dorje is a legend in every sense—calm, wise, strong, and full of stories. He knew the trails inside out and constantly kept us motivated, safe, and smiling. From the glacier crossings of Cho La to the dramatic views from Gokyo Ri, he made every moment special. One day, I struggled with altitude headaches, and Pem Dorje immediately adjusted our plan, gave me warm soup, and walked beside me at my pace. That level of care made all the difference. The trail itself is pure magic—massive peaks, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, quiet Sherpa villages, and stunning alpine lakes. We even spotted musk deer and Himalayan pheasants! Sherpa Expedition handled everything professionally, from airport pickup to gear checks. The porters were kind and efficient, and we had zero logistical issues. If you want to push yourself while being fully supported by a kind, knowledgeable guide, ask for Pem Dorje. You’ll finish stronger than you ever imagined—and happier, too.

To say that the Everest Three Pass Trek was life-changing would be an understatement. The stunning peaks, vast glaciers, and kind people left an imprint on my soul. But what truly made the trek magical was Tsering Phurba Sherpa, our incredible guide from Sherpa Expedition & Trekking. Tsering was full of joy, laughter, and strength. He was a motivator and a protector—always keeping an eye on our group, adjusting our itinerary when needed, and celebrating every little win with us. I remember the cold mornings and long days, and how Tsering always had hot tea or a snack ready when we needed it most. His care was beyond professional—it felt personal. He even helped me with my backpack straps to ease shoulder strain, and gave away his spare headlamp to someone who lost theirs. The trek itself was everything I hoped for—raw, rugged, and rewarding. We hiked through snow, ice, rock, and forest. The Gokyo Lakes glowed like crystals, and Everest from Kala Patthar was overwhelming. Sherpa Expedition created the perfect balance between challenge and care. If you want to do this trek right, go with them—and ask for Tsering Phurba. You won’t regret it.
