It’s not just a summit, it’s a journey into the heart of the greatest mountain range on earth.
Important Alert:: This climbing expedition is only suitable for experienced trekkers. Due to the rapid itinerary, high altitude, and technical sections of the climb, prior high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering skills are essential. This trip is not recommended for beginners or those without proper acclimatization experience.
Your journey begins with a scenic 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The short but thrilling flight offers stunning aerial views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival in Lukla, you begin your trek with a gentle descent through charming Sherpa villages, lush forests, and suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. After a 4–5 hour trek, you’ll arrive in the riverside village of Phakding, where you’ll spend your first night in the Khumbu region.
Today’s trek follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. The trail gradually ascends through pine forests and past small settlements before entering Sagarmatha National Park. After a steep uphill push, you’ll reach Namche Bazaar, the bustling Sherpa capital and a major hub in the Everest region.
To help your body adjust to the altitude, you’ll spend a rest day in Namche. Take an acclimatization hike to the Everest View Hotel or the Khunde and Khumjung villages for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Namche also offers shops, bakeries, and a cultural museum to explore.
Leaving Namche, the trail continues through alpine forests and scenic ridge lines with views of Ama Dablam dominating the skyline. After passing through the spiritual village of Tengboche, home to the region’s largest monastery, you’ll continue on to Pangboche, one of the highest year-round settlements in the valley.
Today’s trek leads you deeper into the Imja Valley, through rugged terrain and high-altitude landscapes. The trail gradually ascends as you leave the main Everest Base Camp route and head east toward Chhukung, a small village used as a staging point for climbers and trekkers heading to Island Peak and Kongma La Pass.
After final gear checks and acclimatization in Chhukung, you begin your approach to Island Peak Base Camp. The route passes through rocky moraines and glacier-fed streams with stunning views of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Imja Tse (Island Peak). At Base Camp, your climbing team will prepare you for summit day, including safety briefings and practice with technical equipment.
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trip. Starting before dawn, you’ll cross glaciers and ascend steep snow and ice slopes using fixed ropes. After navigating the headwall, you'll reach the summit of Island Peak (6,165m) — a truly unforgettable experience with panoramic views of the Himalayas. After celebrating at the top, descend carefully to Base Camp and continue to Chhukung for a well-earned rest.
Your final trekking day is a short walk from Chhukung to Dingboche, where you’ll board a scenic helicopter ride back to Lukla, saving days of descent. From Lukla, catch your regular flight back to Kathmandu, marking the end of your incredible Island Peak adventure.
You’ll carry your personal gear and share some group equipment, so pack light with layered, weather-appropriate clothing—avoid cotton and choose breathable, insulating fabrics. A windproof duffle (provided and carried by porters) and water are included. Non-trekking items can be stored in Kathmandu. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking supplies all essential expedition gear.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment, including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner, can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
Island Peak is a technical trekking peak requiring good physical fitness and previous high-altitude experience. The climb involves glacier travel, fixed ropes, and steep ascents, so it is best suited for trekkers with mountaineering experience or those who have summited similar peaks before. Prior training in rope work and using crampons and ice axes is highly recommended.
With a summit at 6,189 meters (20,305 ft), proper acclimatization is crucial. The itinerary is designed to include gradual elevation gain and strategic rest days in places like Namche Bazaar and Chhukung. These help your body adjust to the thinner air and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
The adventure starts with a 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the world’s most thrilling airports. Weather delays are common in the mountains, so it’s wise to plan some buffer days in your schedule. The flight offers stunning views of the Himalayas and marks the gateway to your trekking journey.
Climbers stay overnight at Island Peak Base Camp (5,100m) before the summit push. The climb starts early, often around 1–2 AM, and includes glacier crossings, crevasse navigation, and steep snow sections with fixed ropes. The summit rewards you with panoramic views of Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and the surrounding peaks.
After your successful climb, many trekkers choose a helicopter flight from Dingboche to Lukla, cutting days off the descent and offering a breathtaking aerial view of the region. It’s a spectacular way to conclude your adventure before flying back to Kathmandu.
Technical gear like crampons, harness, helmet, ascenders, and ice axe are essential. Most items can be rented in Kathmandu or Chhukung. Pack light but wisely, ensuring you’re ready for cold conditions, altitude, and technical climbing.
