Starting from Lukla, the trek initially follows the popular route to Namche Bazaar, providing a gradual introduction to the Himalayan landscape. From there, trekkers venture off the beaten path towards Gokyo Valley, a pristine area known for its crystal-clear lakes and spectacular mountain panoramas, including views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The highlight of this trek is crossing the Renjo La Pass, which stands at 5,360 meters (17,585 feet). The pass presents a significant physical challenge, requiring stamina, preparation, and proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness.

ITINERARY

Expand All

On Day 1, you will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain town, in a scenic 30-minute flight. Upon arrival at Lukla (2,804 m), the trek officially begins. From Lukla, you will embark on a descent to Phakding, where you can take a short rest. The journey continues along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing suspension bridges and passing small villages. After a few hours, you will begin the steep climb towards Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa capital at 3,441 meters. This bustling town offers a variety of shops, lodges, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

After breakfast in Namche Bazaar, your trek to Dole begins. The route takes you through forests of pine and juniper trees, offering glimpses of distant peaks like Everest and Lhotse. The trail ascends gradually, passing through several Sherpa settlements like Sanasa and Mong. The climb to Dole is steady, and as you near your destination, you'll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Gokyo Valley and surrounding mountains. Dole (4,150 m) offers a more serene and quieter environment compared to the busy Namche Bazaar, making it a perfect place to rest and acclimatize.

Today, you'll continue ascending to Gokyo, passing through the serene alpine landscapes of the Khumbu region. The trail crosses a rocky path with distant views of Ngozumpa Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in the Himalayas. The journey gradually climbs along the valley, offering stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu peaks. After several hours of trekking, you'll reach Gokyo (4,750 m), a picturesque settlement by the pristine Gokyo Lakes. The clear blue lakes set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks make Gokyo a breathtaking location to rest and acclimatize.

On Day 4, you will embark on an early morning hike to Gokyo Ri, a viewpoint located at an elevation of 5,483 meters. The ascent is steep but rewarding, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The early morning light will provide incredible photo opportunities of the snow-capped peaks and Gokyo Lakes below. After spending some time at the summit, you’ll return to Gokyo for the night. The rest of the day will be spent relaxing and acclimatizing, as the altitude can begin to take a toll on your body.

Day 5 is one of the most challenging days of the trek as you will cross the Renjo La Pass, standing at 5,360 meters. The trek begins early to avoid the worst of the afternoon winds. The climb to Renjo La is steep and strenuous, but the panoramic views from the top are worth the effort, with views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. After taking in the views, you will descend toward the village of Thame, a traditional Sherpa settlement located at 3,850 meters. The descent is relatively steep, but it offers an opportunity to explore a quieter part of the Khumbu region.

On Day 6, you will begin the long descent to Lukla, retracing your steps through the valley and enjoying the beauty of the lower Khumbu region. The trail gradually winds down through forests, past waterfalls, and across suspension bridges, making your way back to Phakding. From Phakding, it's a final push uphill to Lukla, where you will spend your last night in the Khumbu region. This day is physically demanding as you descend from a high altitude, but the views and the sense of accomplishment will help you push through.

On the final day of your trek, you will take a short flight back from Lukla to Kathmandu. The 30-minute flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas, providing a fitting end to your adventure in the Everest region. Once in Kathmandu, you can spend the rest of the day relaxing, shopping, or exploring the city. You can also reflect on the incredible experience of the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek.

My experience with Sherpa Lhakpa was fantastic! He was incredibly attentive to all of my needs and always had a smile on his face. The trek to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes was well-organized by the Sherpa Expedition team. Every detail, from the teahouses to the trekking gear, was taken care of. The views along the way were absolutely breathtaking, and I’ll never forget the moment I reached Everest Base Camp.

This trek is probably the best starting point for people planning to trek the peaks in the Everest Region. The trek difficulty is moderate for an absolutely unprepared person, and easy for experienced hikers. The trek is filled with stunning beauty of the very diverse Himalayan terrain. It was a fine experience with dense forests, plain mountains and rocky regions. The trek to the summit was exceptional, and I witnessed the sunrise of a lifetime at the summit, along with a great panoramic view of Mt. Everest and the Greater Himalayan Range. Climatic conditions were good, except for very strong wind on the way to the summit from base camp. I profusely thank Mr. Lhakpa Sona, the Sherpa who was with me throughout the trek, making accommodation and food arrangements during the trek, and for guiding me at each step as it was my first Himalayan trek. I also thank Mr. Ang Giljin the porter, who carried my personal effects and luggage and was incredibly supportive. Finally, I thank Mr. Ram Barakoti for organizing this trek for me. I'm already making plans for my next trek to Gokyo valley and Mt. Gokyo Ri summit with Lhakpa, as the next step towards my dream of summiting Mt. Everest. Thank you Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt. Ltd. ! Let's meet again soon.
