This mountain does not get the publicity it deserves and is a truly beautiful peak with all the trimmings – 3 distinct summits! Be an explorer and don’t follow the crowds!
This is definitely the road less travelled, with fewer people venturing to this mountain. The Churen Himal is located in the west of the Dhaulagiri Range with three major peaks: Churen Himal Central (7385m – considered the main peak), Churen Himal East (7371m) and Churen Himal West (7371m).
Raging rivers, vast forgotten and pristine valleys, rhododendron and other forests home to an array of wildlife as you pass through the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, the only hunting reserve in Nepal covering an area of 1325 km² in the Dhaulagiri Himal of western Nepal in the Rukum, Myagdi and Baglung Districts. Follow trails through Magar villages and discover their unique heritage. Magars follow Buddhism, Hinduism and Bon. Those in the north follow Shamanism (Bon) with a clear connection to Tibetan Buddhism. The trail will expose you to the giant Dhaulagiri (8167m – 7th highest in world) and Annapurna peaks, as well as the Gurja Himal and Churen Himal.
The journey begins in Pokhara and after a road trip leads to the villages of: Darbang (1110m/3641ft), Takam via Dharapani (1670m/5479ft), Lumsang (2120m/6,955ft), Gurja (2620m/8595ft), Darsinge Khark (3600m/11811ft), Burjunga Khark (3415m/11204ft) and finally to Churen Himal Base Camp (4600m/15091ft).
Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will establish three high camps: Camp I (5700m/17700ft), Camp II (6200M/20341ft) and Camp III (6700m/21981ft). We will practice daily numerous climbing skills and take short climbs to higher elevations to give you confidence and an opportunity to test your skills. Your Sherpa Expedition & Trekking guide will check, and double check, all equipment and be sure that everyone is mentally and physically well enough to attempt the climb to Churen Himal Summit (7385m). We have scheduled a few extra days in the itinerary in the event of the weather being unsuitable for climbing. These days are not wasted and will further help you to acclimatize as we camp at several altitudes on the side of the mountain at designated base camps. We will make an early morning start on the day of the climb, allowing ample time to reach the summit. Morning weather is often calmer and more predictable, but we mustn’t forget that “mother nature” makes its own rules.
Climbing Churen Himal requires you are fit and an experienced climber. It is considered a difficult and challenging climb with snow and ice to traverse along with several technical sections. You should be familiar with the use of crampons, ice axe, harness, grappling ropes and other alpine climbing techniques.
Some climbers recommend a gradual ascent to higher altitudes to avoid altitude sickness. The journey to Churen Base Camp meets these criteria and is a more gradual ascent.
The best season to climb Churen Himal is in April or May, in the spring, or in October and November in the fall season. Climbing mountains will teach you patience, persistence and gratitude. It will also leave you memories to last a lifetime.
Sherpa Expedition and Trekking’s Sherpa guides (well known for their climbing skills) will lead you safely to the summit. Our guides are government certified and experienced climbers. We take no chances with your well-being and hence have allowed several days to make up for unforeseen circumstances, such as adjusting to higher altitudes and the possibility of altitude sickness.
