Today is a jam-packed day. We will first visit the ruined fortress of Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress and Buddhist monastery in the upper part of the Paro District, Bhutan. The Dzong was thought to have been built by Tenzin Drukdra in 1649 to celebrate a victory over the invading Tibetans. We will also hike to Taktsang monastery, a 45-minute steep trek through villages and a pine forest. The monastery sits precariously on the edge of a huge granite cliff 800 meters from the Paro valley. In the afternoon we head through the beautiful valley to the museum located within the Ta-Dzong building. It was established in 1968 by the third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The seven floors museum has on display various aspects of Bhutanese culture and history dating back to the 7th century. A short walk from here downhill is the Rinpung Dzong which is the administrative center and school for monks. In the afternoon we drive for around two hours and 65 kilometers to the capital Thimphu where we will stay overnight in a 3 star hotel.
Today we visit the Memorial Chorten built-in memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the 15th-century Changangkha Monastery and the Motithang Takin Preserve to see the rare Takin – the national animal of Bhutan. A little further on we can look down on the beautiful Thimphu Valley. We will also visit the new Drupthob Nunnery Monastery. We will then drive for about three hours to Wangdue Phodrang via the Dochula Pass (3100m). In clear weather you can see the eastern mountain ranges as well as the tallest mountain in Bhutan, Mt.Gangkhar Puensum (7570m). Heading through the pass we drop down to the valleys of Lobesa and on to Wangdue Phodrang Dzong to the markets. We will stay here overnight at a 3 star hotel.
This morning we will drive for about 45 minutes to Punakha and visit the Punakha Dzong which was previously the old capital of Bhutan. This stunning fortress is built between two rivers and has survived glacial floods and fire. Every year during the month of February a procession known as the Punakha Serda commemorates the Bhutanese victory over the Tibetans. In the afternoon we will drive for around 3 hours to Thimphu in time for lunch and then drive another 2 hours to Paro via the oldest building in Bhutan, the Simtokha Dzong that is today a Buddhist university. Tonight we stay at a 4 star hotel with meals provided.

When planning a tour to Bhutan, it's important to have all the necessary details to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some key things to know:
1. Visa and Entry Requirements: All visitors to Bhutan, except for citizens of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, require a visa. Visa applications can only be made through licensed Bhutanese tour operators, such as Sherpa Expedition and Trekking. The tour operator will handle the visa application process on your behalf.
2. Tourism Policy: Bhutan has a unique tourism policy aimed at preserving its culture, environment, and way of life. The government requires all tourists to book their trip through a licensed tour operator and travel on a pre-planned itinerary. A minimum daily package fee is also applicable, which covers accommodation, meals, transportation, and a guide.
3. Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit Bhutan is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer pleasant weather and clear skies, making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, Bhutan can be visited year-round, each season offering its own charm.
4. Cultural Etiquette: Bhutan is a deeply religious and culturally rich country, and it's important to respect its customs and traditions. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, and remove your shoes before entering temples or monasteries. It's also customary to circumambulate religious sites in a clockwise direction.
5. Health and Safety: Bhutan is generally a safe country to visit. However, it's always recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. Altitude sickness can be a concern in higher regions, so acclimatization is important during treks or visits to places like the famous Tiger's Nest Monastery.
6. Currency and Payment: The currency of Bhutan is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN). Indian Rupees are also widely accepted in the country. Credit cards are accepted in some hotels and larger establishments, but it's advisable to carry cash for smaller purchases.
7. Communication: The official language of Bhutan is Dzongkha, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Mobile networks and internet services are available, but coverage may be limited in remote regions.
By keeping these details in mind, you can make the most of your Bhutan tour and fully immerse yourself in the country's unique culture and natural beauty. Sherpa Expedition and Trekking will ensure that your trip is well-planned and memorable, providing you with an authentic Bhutanese experience.
