Island Peak Climbing is a thrilling 7-day climbing adventure that is perfect for pro trekkers who seek a taste of high mountains right in the heart of the Himalayas. The challenge starts from a thrilling 35-minute mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which offers beautiful panoramic views of the mountains. The trek begins with an easy walk to Phakding, which takes you through beautiful Sherpa villages and pine forests, along the Dudh Koshi River.
On day two, you ascend to the bustling Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, at 3,440 meters, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of Everest and acclimatize. The next day, the trail goes to Pangboche, a picturesque village with breathtaking views of Ama Dablam. From there, you proceed to Chhukung, where you hike to the Imja Valley, an ideal location to acclimatize before climbing.
The next leg of your journey will bring you to Island Peak Base Camp, where you'll prepare to summit. The ascent to the 6,189m summit of Island Peak is not for everyone and involves glacier travel, sections of fixed rope, and a steep summit ascent, but it is a pure alpine experience.
Then after summiting, it went back down to Dingboche to rest up. Out of Dingboche, you will do a scenic helicopter flight back to Lukla before catching your regular flight back to Kathmandu.
Short and intense, we recommend this 7-day Island Peak Climbing Adventure before arrival for trekkers who already have high-altitude experience and excellent levels of fitness. A unique combination of cultural trekking, technical mountaineering, and spectacular Himalayan peaks, this trek will leave you with life long memories of an adventure in the Himalayas.
Important Alert: This climbing expedition is only suitable for experienced trekkers. Due to the rapid itinerary, high altitude, and technical sections of the climb, prior high-altitude trekking and basic mountaineering skills are essential. This trip is not recommended for beginners or those without proper acclimatization experience.
Your adventure begins with a thrilling 35-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, offering stunning views of the Himalayan range. After landing in Lukla, the trek begins with a gentle descent through lush forests to Phakding. This is a relatively short day, allowing time for acclimatization and rest at a local teahouse.
Today, you'll trek through Sagarmatha National Park, crossing suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. The path gradually ascends to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, a bustling market town where you can rest and enjoy views of Everest, Lhotse, and other peaks. This is an important acclimatization stop.
After leaving Namche, the trail takes you through picturesque villages and forests, with fantastic views of Ama Dablam. You’ll pass Tengboche Monastery, one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in the region, before continuing to Pangboche, where you’ll spend the night. The altitude continues to rise, so keep hydrated and rest well.
The trek from Pangboche to Chhukung takes you deeper into the Imja Valley, surrounded by towering glaciers and dramatic peaks. This peaceful village is an excellent place for further acclimatization before the more challenging sections of the trek. Chhukung also offers stunning views of Island Peak, which you will soon climb.
Today, you will ascend to Island Peak Base Camp, located at 5,100m. This is a strenuous day, but the incredible views of Island Peak and surrounding glaciers make the effort worthwhile. Upon arrival at Base Camp, you’ll rest and prepare for the summit attempt. It’s essential to hydrate and ensure your climbing gear is in good condition.
The summit day begins early, with an ascent to the 6,165-meter summit of Island Peak. The climb includes navigating glaciers, fixed ropes, and a steep final ascent. After reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Chhukung for a well-earned rest.
Today is a much easier day as you trek down to Dingboche, where you will take a helicopter back to Lukla. The helicopter ride offers stunning aerial views of the Khumbu region. Once back in Lukla, you’ll catch a scenic flight back to Kathmandu, marking the end of your exciting adventure.
You will be carrying all of your gear and share some of the cluster gear. Keeping your pack light is important, so choose light-weight clothing and equipment. Be sure to have a range of clothing suitable for all conditions. Sudden change of weather may require layering of clothing. Three layers will meet your needs. Avoid cotton or fabrics that do not maintain heat when cold. Comfortable durable wool (or proven fabrics) that breathe and expel sweat lends itself to an additional pleasant experience!'
We will offer complimentary water and a windproof duffle that you'll use on the trek - carried by porters. The duffle is yours to keep once at the end of the trek. You can safely leave your bag, together with your non-trekking requirements, at our office in Katmandu and collect them upon your return.
All equipment, such as base camp tents, room accessories, climbing rope, ice screws, snow bar and ice hammer is provided by Sherpa Expedition & Trekking.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
This 7-day plan is a rapid expedition, designed for experienced trekkers with prior high-altitude trekking or basic mountaineering experience. The pace is quick, with minimal acclimatization stops, making fitness and altitude adaptation crucial.
After summiting Island Peak, the return to Lukla is by helicopter from Dingboche, saving two to three trekking days. This not only shortens the itinerary but also provides a scenic and comfortable exit from the mountains.
There is only one night spent at Island Peak Base Camp before the summit attempt. This requires climbers to be well-prepared physically and mentally, with gear checks and rest completed promptly.
Island Peak involves basic technical climbing, including glacier travel, fixed ropes, ladders, and crampon use. Knowledge of abseiling and ascending with a jumar is essential. A short training session may be included at Chhukung.
Due to the tight schedule, acclimatization is limited. Altitude gain is fast, so this itinerary is not suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers. Altitude medication or a prior trek above 4,500m is strongly recommended.
Flights to/from Lukla and helicopter services are weather-dependent. Delays are possible, so it’s wise to add a buffer day in Kathmandu at the end of your trip.
Climbing equipment like boots, harness, helmet, and crampons can be rented in Chhukung or Namche, reducing the need to carry everything from Kathmandu.
Travel insurance that covers emergency helicopter evacuation and climbing up to 6,500m is mandatory. Always carry a copy of your policy with you.
