The Island Peak climbing trip, which is 9 days long and organized by Sherpa Expeditions, is a great option if you are short on time yet still want the excitement of climbing one of Nepal’s most famous peaks. This is a brief and fulfilling trip that brings you to the great landscapes of the Everest region and a happy trip against acute or altitude sickness.
Your journey starts with a stunning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, home to one of the most thrilling airports in the world. You’ll trek from Lukla to Phakding, a mere taste of the raw beauty of the mighty Himalayas. The next day, you’ll raise your altitude even higher to Namche Bazaar, the colorful Sherpa headquarters, where you’ll rest for the day to acclimatize to the thinning air and enjoy the panoramic views of Everest and nearby peaks.
After Namche, you push to Tengboche, where the world-renowned Tengboche Monastery is, then to Dingboche, a beautiful village at Everest's base. From Dingboche, you’ll hike to Chhukung and enjoy another acclimatization day before the final push to Island Peak Base Camp.
You will arrive at Island Peak Base Camp on Day 6, and prepare yourself for the final climb to the summit. The climb up Island Peak (6,165m) is both challenging and absolutely amazing and offers stunning views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu. After you reach the top, you’ll return to Chhukung for the descent.
Then on Day 7, you’ll hike to Tengboche before hopping a picturesque helicopter flight from Tengboche to Lukla to save time on the way back down. Last but not least: take a regular flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu, and 9 days later, your memorable Himalayan journey is complete.
This trip is ideal for those who look for a quick & short refreshing experience in the Himalayas.
Your adventure begins with an exciting scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The short but thrilling flight offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range. Once you land in Lukla, your trek begins with a gradual descent to Phakding. You’ll pass through traditional Sherpa villages and lush forests along the Dudh Koshi River. After a 4–5 hour trek, you’ll arrive at Phakding, where you will rest for the night.
Today, you’ll continue along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge. As you gain elevation, the landscape transforms, and you'll enjoy the beauty of pine forests and views of towering peaks. After a steep ascent, you will arrive in Namche Bazaar, the bustling Sherpa capital. This lively town offers various shops, cafés, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains, including your first sighting of Mount Everest.
Acclimatization is vital at this altitude, so today will be a rest day in Namche. To aid your body in adjusting to the higher elevations, you’ll go for a short acclimatization hike to the Everest View Hotel, where you can enjoy magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and more. Alternatively, you can visit Khunde and Khumjung villages or explore the Sherpa Museum. Rest and hydration are key today, as your body adjusts to the thinning air.
Leaving Namche, you’ll follow the trail along the ridge with great views of Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse. After crossing a few bridges, you’ll enter the Tengboche Monastery area and enjoy its breathtaking views. Continuing your trek, you’ll arrive in Pangboche, a small village known for its fantastic views of the nearby peaks. You’ll stay overnight here, experiencing the peaceful atmosphere and incredible views.
Today’s trek will take you along the Imja Valley towards Chhukung, a small but important stop for climbers heading to Island Peak. As you pass through Somare and Shomare, you’ll get amazing views of Ama Dablam. The trail is relatively gentle but gradually ascends towards Chhukung, where you’ll stay for the night. This village is a key acclimatization stop for climbers preparing for Island Peak summit.
You’ll spend another important acclimatization day in Chhukung. To further aid in acclimatization, you will hike to Chhukung Ri (5,550m), a peak that offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Island Peak, Makalu, and Lhotse. This day allows your body to adjust to the altitude, while providing an excellent opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan scenery. After descending back to Chhukung, you’ll rest for the night.
The journey to Island Peak Base Camp begins with a trek through rocky moraines and glacial rivers, gradually ascending towards the Base Camp. Along the way, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding peaks, including Lhotse, Makalu, and Island Peak itself. Upon reaching Base Camp, you’ll settle in and prepare for the next day's summit push, checking your gear and having a final briefing with the climbing team.
Summit day is the most challenging and rewarding of the trek. You’ll begin your ascent to the summit of Island Peak before dawn, as the early morning light reveals the stunning landscape around you. The climb involves glacier travel, navigating steep snow and ice slopes, and using fixed ropes on the final ascent. Once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and surrounding peaks. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Chhukung to rest and recuperate.
The final day starts with a short trek from Chhukung to Dingboche, enjoying the views as you descend. Once you reach Dingboche, you will board a helicopter to Lukla, bypassing the long descent and saving valuable time. From Lukla, you’ll take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu, marking the end of your incredible adventure.
You’ll carry your personal gear and share some group equipment, so pack light with layered, weather-appropriate clothing—avoid cotton and choose breathable, insulating fabrics. A windproof duffle (provided and carried by porters) and water are included. Non-trekking items can be stored in Kathmandu. Sherpa Expedition & Trekking supplies all essential expedition gear.
It is important to invest in high-quality gear and ensure that everything fits properly and is in good condition. Additionally, consult with experienced climbers or a professional guide to ensure you have all the necessary gear and receive proper training on how to use it effectively and safely.
Note: Essential climbing equipment, including an ice axe, crampons, climbing boots, harness, helmet, safety rope, ascender (jumar), and carabiner, can be hired in Chhukung. The total cost is approximately USD 120 per person for a complete set.
The adventure begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is a thrilling experience in itself. Lukla's airport is perched in the mountains, offering some of the most awe-inspiring views of the Himalayan range during takeoff and landing. From Lukla, you'll begin your trek towards Phakding, passing through traditional Sherpa villages and lush forests, setting the tone for the journey ahead.
To help your body adjust to the high altitudes, you'll spend two acclimatization days during the trek—one in Namche Bazaar and another in Chhukung. These days are essential for preventing altitude sickness and giving you the best chance to reach the summit of Island Peak safely. Acclimatization hikes in these regions offer panoramic views of the Himalayas, providing not only physical benefits but also a chance to explore the culture of the Sherpa people.
Along the route, you’ll pass through important Sherpa settlements like Tengboche and Dingboche, where you can learn about the rich Sherpa culture and visit iconic landmarks such as the Tengboche Monastery. The trekking route offers the opportunity to experience local traditions, visit ancient Buddhist monasteries, and interact with the local Sherpa people, making your journey a combination of both adventure and cultural immersion.
Reaching the summit of Island Peak (6,165m) is the highlight of this trip. While challenging, the climb is accessible to trekkers with prior high-altitude experience. The ascent includes glacier travel, rope sections, and a steep final push, but the breathtaking views from the top—stretching across the Himalayas, including Everest, Makalu, and Lhotse—are more than worth the effort. This summit day will be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.
After a successful summit, instead of trekking all the way back down, enjoy the convenience of a helicopter flight from Tengboche to Lukla. This flight offers you the chance to soak in the stunning aerial views of the Everest region. It’s a great way to conserve energy after the climb while appreciating the beauty of the region from a new perspective before heading back to Kathmandu.
The 9-day itinerary is designed for those with limited time but still looking for a high-adrenaline Himalayan adventure. While shorter than traditional Everest Base Camp treks, this itinerary allows you to experience the grandeur of the Himalayas, summiting Island Peak, and returning safely—all within a week. It's an ideal option for trekkers who want to pack the full experience into a short window of time.
