The 11 day Annapurna Base Camp Trek is one of the most popular treks and destinations in Nepal and will take you into the protected Annapurna Conservation Area with its beautiful scenery and will give you an opportunity to experience the intriguing lifestyles of the Gurung culture and villages in this area. The Annapurna Base Camp Trek (ABC) (4130m), also referred to as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek offers in-your-face views of enormous mountain ranges and peaks, including Hiunchuli, Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Annapurna South.
The best time for this trek is in spring when the rhododendron forests (Nepal’s national flower) are in full blossom (red, pink & white). However, this trek can be undertaken at any time of the year. Some of the peaks you will see are: Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m), Mt. Annapurna I (8091m), Mt. Manaslu (8163 m), Mt. Annapurna II (7937 m.), Mt. Annapurna III (7555m), Mt. Annapurna IV (7525m), Mt. Annapurna south (7219m), Tharpu Chuli (5663m), Singu Chuli (6501m), Mt. Nilgiri (7041m), Mt. Machapuchare (6998m), Mt. Hiunchuli (6441m), Mt. Lamjung Himal (6986m) and Tukuche Peak (6920m). This region is famous for its Tibetan Buddhist presence that is obvious by the abundant chortens (Buddhist stone monuments), and colorful Tibetan prayer flags fluttering in the wind along the trail. You will see yaks grazing in high alpine pastures, trek through bamboo forests and view the typical Tibetan style architecture in the villages.
Your breathtaking adventure begins at Kathmandu from where you will travel by bus to Pokhara and on then to Ghandruk where we begin by trekking alongside the Modi Khola River just below and terraced rice fields directly above us. The next village we arrive at is Chomrong (2170m). The following day we head to Bamboo/Himalaya Lodge. We then continue on to Deurali, Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC) on our way to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). We then head back to Bamboo, Jhinu Danda and Nayapul from where we take a bus back to Pokhara.
Sherpa Expediton Teams have an excellent reputation in the trekking business and will take care of all permits (required in this region), accommodation and meals on this trek to ABC.
on your arrival at Kathmandu, you will be met by a representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams and taken to your hotel in Kathmandu’s tourist hub, Thamel. You will have time to spare and can explore this vibrant area of Kathmandu where there are many restaurants, cafes and places to purchase any equipment you need on this trek. You will also be briefed on what to expect on the trail.
We will take an early morning flight to Pokhara. On the flight you will get glimpses of the enormous Himalayan Massif. From Pokhara we drive for about 1.5 hours to Nayapul from where our trek begins. We pass through Birethanti and then on to the predominantly Gurung town of Ghandruk where we will stay overnight.
Our second day on the trail takes us to Chomrong Village which is the last village before entering the region and gateway to Annapurna Base Camp. The trail descends from Ghandruk to the Kyuri Khola (river) and then to Kimrong Danda. We will trek through terraced farmlands before coming to the Gurung village of Chomrong (2170m).
This morning we plod down 2500 stone steps and then cross the bridge above the Chomrong Khola before climbing up to Sinuwa Village. The next section of the trail takes us through a forest and on to Khuldighar before a relatively easy descent to Bamboo Village.
We begin today by trekking through a bamboo forest and gradually head higher with some parts of the trail quite steep. After reaching Himalaya Hotel/Deurali the trail emerges from the forest and we have views of the icy - cold river below us. We then have a steep climb through more forest before arriving at Hinku Cave. The trail once again heads down to the river before ascending once more to Deurali. The vegetation is sparser here and allows some fantastic views as we look down to the valley and river below, and the vertical cliffs above us with waterfalls cascading down.
This morning we trek across a riverbed and then on a steep trail from Bagar to Machapuchare Base Camp. From Machapuchare Base Camp we will have some breathtaking views of Mt. Machapuchare, Mt. Hiunchuli, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gandharvachuli and Gangapurna. The vegetation is sparse as we ascend to ABC. From here we have further breathtaking views of the close to vertical south face of Annapurna towering above us. The Annapurna sanctuary has amazing 360-degree panoramic views and we can clearly see Mt. Machapuchare, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Hiunchuli and other snow-capped peaks.
On leaving Annapurna Base Camp we retrace our steps on the trail back to Bamboo. Luckily the trail is nearly all downhill that makes is easier to traverse. On the downhill trail, we can look out over an unbelievable landscape before arriving at Bamboo Village.
This morning we head out on the trail from Bamboo and after a short ascent arrive at Sinuwa Village (2320m) and then Chomrong Village. We will take a short break at Chomrong before heading uphill and then we descend to Jhinu Danda. This is an enjoyable and relaxing time to sit back and relax those aching muscles in the therapeutic hot spring situated just below the Modi River.
This morning we follow the trail for six hours until we arrive at Nayapul from where we take a bus back to Pokhara. This leg of the trip, by bus, will allow you to soak up this magnificent mountain scenery. We will stay at Pokhara tonight.
Today we can choose to fly or take a 6 to 7-hour bus trip back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu, you will be taken to your hotel.
Today a representative from Sherpa Expedition Teams will drop you off at the airport at least three hours prior to your scheduled departure. We look forward to hearing from you and would welcome some feedback on your experience on this trek. We would love to hear from you when you next visit Nepal on another great mountain adventure. Feel free to contact us at anytime to plan your return to this amazing country.
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
(Note our company guide will carry the medicines and first aid kits during the trek. However, we recommend you bring your personal first-aid kit as well)
You will be accommodated in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. During the trek, we will be staying at lodges/ teahouses. You may find comfort and better quality teahouses - having attached bathroom at lower levels- until you reach higher elevations, where the accommodation is more basic with bare necessities.
In Kathmandu, your hotel includes breakfast, whereas all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be provided during the trek. A staple food of these regions is potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew and Tibetan bread. Sherpa’s’ started farming potatoes when the first seeds were introduced to the region in the early 90s. There is a limited choice of food at higher elevations and except many potato dishes. Potatoes are high in carbohydrates – an excellent source of energy needed at high altitudes.
We use a private car for sightseeing and for the airport to hotel pick and drop off. We use public transportation or local buses during the trek.
This can be a challenging trek where you often have to walk 6-7 hours a day. You don’t need past experience of hiking or trekking but if you have done any kind of trekking activities then it is always a plus! We have met people from all walks of life, shapes and sizes who have completed the trek. The only difficult part is when altitude sickness strikes and the effect that it can have on your body. Before leaving for Nepal it is good if you can prepare yourself physically by increasing your stamina and oxygen intake.
