GOOD TO KNOW

📝 Permits Required for the Trek

To trek the Annapurna Circuit, Tilicho Lake, Poon Hill, and Annapurna Base Camp, trekkers need two essential permits:

  1. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): This permit is required for entry into the Annapurna region.
  2. TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) Card: This card is a mandatory requirement for all trekkers. Both permits can be easily obtained in Pokhara or Kathmandu.

🎒 Fitness and Preparation

This trek is considered challenging due to its high altitude, long distances, and varied terrain. It is essential to prepare physically by engaging in cardio and endurance activities, such as hiking, cycling, or swimming. Regularly walking on uneven terrain with a backpack will also help with preparation. Ensure you train at least a few months before the trek for the best experience.

🧳 What to Pack

A well-packed bag is key to a successful trek. Essential items to bring include:

  • Clothing: Layered clothing for varied temperatures (quick-drying, warm layers, and a waterproof jacket).
  • Footwear: Comfortable and sturdy trekking boots.
  • Accessories: Trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.
  • Personal gear: Sleeping bag, headlamp, and a water purifier. It's important to pack light, as you will carry your own gear during the trek.

🛏️ Accommodations

During the trek, you will stay in tea houses or lodges in the villages along the way. These provide basic amenities such as beds, meals, and warm showers. The accommodations may vary in comfort, but they are usually sufficient for trekkers. It’s best to reserve your room ahead, especially during peak seasons.

🌄 Best Time to Trek

The best time for the Annapurna Circuit, Tilicho Lake, Poon Hill, and ABC Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is clear, and the views are spectacular. Avoid trekking in the winter (December to February) and monsoon (June to August) due to snowfall and rain, respectively.

💧 Water and Hydration

It’s important to stay hydrated throughout the trek. While there are drinking water stations along the trail, it’s safer to carry a water purification system like a filter or purification tablets to avoid any potential waterborne illnesses.

⚖️ Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is common above 3,000 meters, especially in areas like Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. To prevent this, make sure to take proper rest days and hydrate regularly. Symptoms of altitude sickness include dizziness, nausea, and headaches. If symptoms persist, it is essential to descend to a lower altitude immediately.

💰 Trekking Budget

Trekking in the Annapurna region is relatively affordable compared to other popular trekking destinations. However, your budget will depend on accommodation choices, food, and whether you hire guides or porters. Expect to spend around $25-30 USD per day for a solo trek, including lodging, meals, and permits.

🍽️ Food During the Trek

There are a variety of meals available during the trek, ranging from local Nepali dishes like Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice) to international options like pasta and pizza. However, meals higher up on the trail can be a bit pricier. It's advisable to stick to safe, locally prepared foods to avoid stomach issues.

🚶‍♂️ Guide and Porter Services

While it’s possible to trek independently, hiring a guide and/or porter can significantly enhance your experience. Guides can help with navigation, local culture, and language, while porters can carry your heavy backpack, allowing you to trek comfortably. Both services are affordable and can be arranged in Pokhara or Kathmandu.

It's best to carry a water purification system like a filter or purification tablets, as water sources along the trail may not always be safe to drink. Boiled water is usually provided at tea houses, but it’s always better to be cautious.

The average cost of the trek is around $25-30 USD per day. This includes lodging, meals, permits, and local transportation. If you hire a guide or porter, it will add to your daily expenses.

My experience with Sherpa Lhakpa was fantastic! He was incredibly attentive to all of my needs and always had a smile on his face. The trek to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes was well-organized by the Sherpa Expedition team. Every detail, from the teahouses to the trekking gear, was taken care of. The views along the way were absolutely breathtaking, and I’ll never forget the moment I reached Everest Base Camp.

This trek is probably the best starting point for people planning to trek the peaks in the Everest Region. The trek difficulty is moderate for an absolutely unprepared person, and easy for experienced hikers. The trek is filled with stunning beauty of the very diverse Himalayan terrain. It was a fine experience with dense forests, plain mountains and rocky regions. The trek to the summit was exceptional, and I witnessed the sunrise of a lifetime at the summit, along with a great panoramic view of Mt. Everest and the Greater Himalayan Range. Climatic conditions were good, except for very strong wind on the way to the summit from base camp. I profusely thank Mr. Lhakpa Sona, the Sherpa who was with me throughout the trek, making accommodation and food arrangements during the trek, and for guiding me at each step as it was my first Himalayan trek. I also thank Mr. Ang Giljin the porter, who carried my personal effects and luggage and was incredibly supportive. Finally, I thank Mr. Ram Barakoti for organizing this trek for me. I'm already making plans for my next trek to Gokyo valley and Mt. Gokyo Ri summit with Lhakpa, as the next step towards my dream of summiting Mt. Everest. Thank you Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt. Ltd. ! Let's meet again soon.
