ITINERARY

Expand All

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Dharapani, a small village located in the Manang district. The 8-9 hour drive passes through beautiful landscapes, terraced fields, and villages along winding roads. You’ll be driven through Besisahar before reaching Dharapani, which marks the official start of your trek. Upon arrival, settle into your teahouse and prepare for the trek ahead.

After breakfast, begin your trek from Dharapani to Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. The trail initially follows a forested path, offering views of the surrounding mountains, including Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. As you move along, the vegetation changes, and the rugged landscapes of the Himalayas start to emerge. The trek takes about 5-6 hours, and you'll reach Chame, a charming village with stunning mountain views, where you’ll rest for the night.

Today’s trek takes you to Pisang, a picturesque village surrounded by high peaks. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests and alongside the river, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll pass through Upper Pisang where the trail ascends to the Tibetan-influenced region. The trek is relatively short, taking around 4-5 hours, but the altitude begins to increase, so it’s important to pace yourself. Upon arrival, enjoy the spectacular views of Gangapurna and Annapurna II.

Today’s trek to Manang takes you through the Ngawal Village, a charming settlement with typical Tibetan architecture. As you leave Pisang, the trail ascends steeply toward Ngawal, where you can enjoy amazing views of the Himalayan peaks. Continuing on, you’ll trek to Manang, the largest village in the region, offering stunning views of Gangapurna and Annapurna III. The day’s trek will take about 6-7 hours, and once you reach Manang, take time to relax and acclimatize.

Manang is a great place to rest and acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Spend the day exploring the local area, visiting the Manang Monastery, and enjoying the views of Annapurna III and Gangapurna. You can also take a side trip to Ice Lake (about 3-4 hours round trip) for panoramic views of the mountains. This day will help your body adjust to the higher elevations and prepare for the challenging days ahead.

Today, you will trek to Tilicho Base Camp, passing through Temang and Khangsar villages. The route is less traveled and offers peaceful surroundings as you make your way to the base camp. The trek takes about 5-6 hours and the terrain becomes increasingly rugged. Once you reach Tilicho Base Camp, enjoy the view of the surrounding peaks. The area offers a good place to rest and prepare for tomorrow’s hike to Tilicho Lake.

Today is one of the most rewarding days of the trek as you will hike to the Tilicho Lake at 4,920 meters, one of the highest lakes in the world. The hike to the lake takes around 3-4 hours, and the views of the turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks are breathtaking. After spending some time at the lake, return to Tilicho Base Camp for a brief rest before continuing on to Shree Kharka, a small village. The total trek today takes around 7-8 hours.

From Shree Kharka, the trail ascends gradually toward Yak Kharka. The route takes you through alpine meadows, where you may see yaks grazing. The trek is relatively short, about 5-6 hours, but the altitude begins to take its toll, so it’s important to take your time and stay hydrated. Upon reaching Yak Kharka, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and stunning mountain views before resting for the night.

Today, you will trek to Thorong Phedi, the last stop before crossing Thorong La Pass. The trek is short, taking around 3-4 hours, but the altitude makes it important to walk slowly and acclimatize. Thorong Phedi is a base camp-like settlement, offering a final resting spot before your crossing of the high pass tomorrow. Be sure to prepare everything for the big day ahead.

The highlight of the trek is crossing Thorong La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world at 5,416 meters. This is a challenging day, as you will start early in the morning to avoid strong winds. After reaching the pass, you will enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. From the pass, descend to Muktinath, a sacred Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site. The trek today takes around 7-9 hours, and you will be relieved to rest at Muktinath, with its sacred temples and stunning scenery.

After your challenging and rewarding trek, you will take a drive from Muktinath back to Pokhara. The scenic drive takes around 8-9 hours, offering views of the lush valleys, rivers, and mountains. While previous trekking experience is recommended, those with good fitness and a readiness for long days of hiking can complete it. Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness.

🏞️ Scenic Beauty

Expect spectacular views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu ranges. As you trek through alpine meadows, lush valleys, and traditional villages, you'll be treated to breathtaking landscapes. Tilicho Lake offers a serene and magical experience at an altitude of 4,920 meters. The crossing of Thorong La Pass is another highlight, offering panoramic views of some of the world’s highest peaks.

🏕️ Accommodation

Accommodation along the Annapurna Circuit is mainly in teahouses or basic lodges. These offer simple rooms and local meals. In higher altitudes, accommodations are basic but adequate. The lodges are generally welcoming, and you’ll have the chance to interact with fellow trekkers and locals. Remember to book your rooms in advance during peak season to ensure availability.

🍽️ Food and Water

The food along the Annapurna Circuit is a blend of local Nepali and Tibetan dishes, including dal bhat, momo, noodles, and rice. In higher altitudes, the menu may become more limited. It's important to stay hydrated, and bottled water is available along the trail, though it’s best to bring a water purification system or tablets to avoid buying plastic bottles. You can refill your water bottles at teahouses during the trek.

🧳 Packing List

A well-packed bag is crucial for a successful trek. Essential items include a sleeping bag, waterproof jacket, warm clothing for cold evenings, and sturdy trekking boots. Don’t forget your camera, headlamp, trekking poles, and a first aid kit. Also, pack light, as carrying too much weight will add unnecessary strain on your journey.

🌍 Cultural Experience

The Annapurna region is home to a rich Tibetan-influenced culture. Throughout the trek, you'll pass by Manang, Pisang, and Ngawal villages, where the local people follow a unique lifestyle. You’ll also visit sacred sites like Muktinath, a pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists. Engaging with the locals and experiencing their way of life is one of the highlights of the trek.

🚶‍♂️ Acclimatization

Acclimatization is crucial for a safe and successful trek at high altitudes. Rest days, such as the one in Manang, are built into the itinerary to help you adjust to the thinning air. Taking it slow and avoiding rapid ascents is essential to avoid altitude sickness. Drink plenty of water, and if you feel any symptoms of altitude sickness, inform your guide and rest immediately.

🚐 Transportation

The trek starts with a drive from Pokhara to Besisahar by bus, followed by a shared jeep ride to Dharapani. From there, the trek begins. At the end of the trek, you’ll take a local bus from Muktinath back to Pokhara. This scenic drive offers beautiful views of the mountains and countryside, making it a relaxed way to reflect on your journey.

⚠️ Health and Safety

Trekking at high altitudes can be physically demanding, so it’s important to be prepared. Prior to departure, make sure to check your health and fitness. It’s recommended to bring any necessary medications and consult with your doctor before heading to high altitudes. It’s essential to listen to your body, especially if you experience symptoms of altitude sickness such as headaches or dizziness.

🛑 Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for trekkers. Make sure your insurance covers high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and any medical expenses. Accidents can happen, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry. This will give you peace of mind during the trek, especially when trekking in remote areas where medical facilities are limited.

This trek is probably the best starting point for people planning to trek the peaks in the Everest Region. The trek difficulty is moderate for an absolutely unprepared person, and easy for experienced hikers. The trek is filled with stunning beauty of the very diverse Himalayan terrain. It was a fine experience with dense forests, plain mountains and rocky regions. The trek to the summit was exceptional, and I witnessed the sunrise of a lifetime at the summit, along with a great panoramic view of Mt. Everest and the Greater Himalayan Range. Climatic conditions were good, except for very strong wind on the way to the summit from base camp. I profusely thank Mr. Lhakpa Sona, the Sherpa who was with me throughout the trek, making accommodation and food arrangements during the trek, and for guiding me at each step as it was my first Himalayan trek. I also thank Mr. Ang Giljin the porter, who carried my personal effects and luggage and was incredibly supportive. Finally, I thank Mr. Ram Barakoti for organizing this trek for me. I'm already making plans for my next trek to Gokyo valley and Mt. Gokyo Ri summit with Lhakpa, as the next step towards my dream of summiting Mt. Everest. Thank you Sherpa Expedition and Trekking Pvt. Ltd. ! Let's meet again soon.
