TSUM VALLEY TREK 11 DAYS

The Tsum Valley Trek – 11 Days is an exclusive trekking package thoughtfully designed by Sherpa Expedition to offer a deep dive into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich Himalayan valleys. This journey begins and ends in Kathmandu, Nepal’s bustling capital, and combines stunning natural beauty with unique Tibetan Buddhist cultural experiences. The trek takes you through pristine landscapes, traditional villages, and ancient monasteries, providing an unforgettable adventure off the beaten path.

The expedition starts with a private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Machhakhola, the gateway to the Manaslu Conservation Area and Tsum Valley region. The journey to Machhakhola offers scenic views of terraced farmlands, rivers, and Himalayan foothills, setting the tone for the days ahead. Machhakhola itself is a small, peaceful village nestled beside the Budhi Gandaki River, where the trekking trail officially begins.

From Machhakhola, the trek proceeds upstream through lush forests and alongside the river to Jagat, a key settlement and the last major village before entering the restricted Tsum Valley region. Along the way, trekkers experience the beauty of Nepal’s rural life, cross suspension bridges, and trek through rhododendron and pine forests.

The next phase takes you from Jagat to Lokpa, a quiet village that marks the threshold of the Tsum Valley. The trail gradually climbs, allowing trekkers to acclimatize while enjoying spectacular mountain views. From Lokpa, you continue to Chumling, often referred to as Lower Tsum, where the atmosphere changes dramatically to reveal a distinctly Tibetan cultural influence. Stone mani walls, chortens (Buddhist shrines), and prayer flags become prominent features as you enter this spiritual valley.

The trek then ascends further to Chhokangparo (Chekenparo), a cluster of picturesque villages perched on the mountainside. Here, the backdrop of towering peaks like Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli adds to the enchanting landscape. The local inhabitants maintain their traditional lifestyle, allowing visitors to witness Tibetan Buddhist customs and architecture in their most authentic form.

A highlight of the trek is the visit to Mu Gompa (Mu Monastery), situated at approximately 3,700 meters. This ancient monastery is one of the oldest and most revered Buddhist sites in the region. It serves as a spiritual center for the valley’s residents and a peaceful retreat for trekkers. The journey to Mu Gompa rewards visitors with panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, a profound sense of tranquility, and insight into Buddhist monastic life.

After exploring Mu Gompa, trekkers return to Chhokangparo, then descend back through Chumling, Lokpa, and Jagat. This return journey offers a chance to reflect on the cultural richness and natural beauty experienced during the trek. Once back in Jagat, a private jeep awaits to take you on the scenic drive back to Kathmandu, where the adventure concludes.

This 11-day Tsum Valley Trek is perfect for travelers seeking solitude, culture, and natural beauty away from the crowds. Sherpa Expedition’s expertly crafted itinerary ensures comfortable transport, knowledgeable guides, and all necessary permits, including the Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit and Manaslu Conservation Area Permit. The trek provides a balanced blend of physical challenge, spiritual discovery, and cultural immersion, making it a rewarding experience for adventurers and culture enthusiasts alike.

Embark on this journey with Sherpa Expedition to discover the hidden treasures of Nepal’s Tsum Valley—an unforgettable trek through pristine landscapes and timeless traditions.

Your adventure begins with a scenic private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Machhakhola, the gateway to the Tsum Valley. The journey takes about 8 to 9 hours, passing through winding mountain roads, rivers, and small villages. Upon arrival, enjoy the peaceful riverside village and prepare for the trek ahead.

Start your trek along the Budhi Gandaki River, walking through lush forests and terraced fields. Cross several suspension bridges and witness traditional village life. You will reach Jagat, a vibrant village that marks the entry point into the Manaslu Conservation Area, and the last motorable road before the trekking begins.

The trail gradually ascends through dense forests filled with rhododendron and pine trees. Pass through small settlements where you’ll get a glimpse of local culture and hospitality. Reach Lokpa, a quiet village that serves as a gateway to the restricted Tsum Valley region.

Continue trekking deeper into the Tsum Valley, which is renowned for its Tibetan Buddhist culture and stunning natural beauty. Reach Chumling, the largest village in Lower Tsum. Explore ancient mani walls, stupas, and traditional stone houses, all surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan views.

The trail becomes steeper as you ascend toward Upper Tsum. Pass through forests and alpine meadows to reach Chokhangparo, a cluster of small villages perched on a ridge with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Trek further up the valley to Nile, a remote settlement near the Tibetan border. This area is rich in Buddhist culture and natural beauty. The village is surrounded by towering peaks and peaceful landscapes, making it a perfect base for the next day’s visit to Mu Gompa.

Take a half-day hike to Mu Gompa, one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region. The spiritual atmosphere and stunning mountain views here make it a highlight of the trek. After exploring the monastery, descend back to Nile for overnight rest.

Begin your descent back through the valley, retracing your steps from Nile to Chumling. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on the unique cultural experiences of the region as you move through peaceful villages and beautiful landscapes.

Continue descending through forests and terraced fields to Lokpa. The trail becomes easier as you approach lower altitudes, allowing you to relax and enjoy the serene environment before the final trek back.

Complete the last trekking day as you return to Jagat. This final leg passes through villages and lush valleys, marking the end of your trekking adventure in Tsum Valley. Rest well and prepare for the journey back to Kathmandu.

GOOD TO KNOW

Unique Cultural Experience in a Restricted Himalayan Valley

Tsum Valley is a restricted area, which means it’s protected from mass tourism and remains one of the most culturally intact regions in Nepal. The valley is inhabited by Tibetan-speaking people who practice ancient Buddhist traditions, preserving centuries-old customs, rituals, and festivals. Visiting this valley offers trekkers a rare opportunity to witness authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture, including visits to ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa, local prayer rituals, and traditional stone architecture.

Pristine Natural Beauty and Scenic Himalayan Views

The trek takes you through some of Nepal’s most untouched landscapes, from lush rhododendron forests and terraced farmlands to alpine meadows and snow-capped peaks. Throughout the journey, trekkers are treated to spectacular views of major Himalayan ranges such as Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Shingi Himal. The quiet valleys, flowing rivers, and pristine nature make this trek a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.

Moderate Trekking Challenge Suitable for Many Levels

While the Tsum Valley Trek involves trekking at moderately high altitudes (up to about 3,700 meters at Mu Gompa), the trails are generally gradual and manageable. This makes the trek accessible to those with good basic fitness who are ready for several hours of hiking daily. Sherpa Expedition’s experienced guides ensure safe pacing and proper acclimatization, helping even first-time trekkers enjoy this unique journey.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure with Fewer Crowds

Unlike popular trekking routes such as Everest or Annapurna, the Tsum Valley remains relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. This means you can explore peaceful trails and traditional villages without the hustle and bustle of large trekking groups. The solitude and tranquility of the valley offer a more intimate and immersive trekking experience, perfect for travelers seeking quiet reflection and deep cultural connection.

Comprehensive Support and Permits Provided by Sherpa Expedition

Tsum Valley is a restricted area that requires special permits, including the Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit and the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit. Sherpa Expedition handles all the necessary logistics, permits, and arrangements, allowing you to focus fully on your trekking experience. I signed up for the Annapurna Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition based on a friend’s recommendation, and now I can confidently say it was the best travel decision I’ve ever made. Our guide, Tshering, was truly special. Calm, experienced, and incredibly warm-hearted, he guided us through every step with confidence and care. What I admired most was how he made sure everyone in the group felt supported. Whether it was helping with altitude or simply offering a kind word during steep climbs, he was always there. The trek itself was stunning—every day revealed a new landscape and view. We trekked through rhododendron forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and finally reached the snow-filled amphitheater of Annapurna Base Camp. Sherpa Expedition managed all logistics perfectly—from flights to accommodation to delicious meals at the tea houses. Tshering taught us about the culture, pointed out peaks, and even made us laugh during the tough sections. The views from base camp were beyond anything I’ve ever seen—pure magic. I left Nepal with new friendships and a heart full of gratitude. Thank you, Tshering, and thank you, Sherpa Expedition, for an unforgettable experience.

Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Sherpa Expedition made the entire journey smooth and stress-free, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Dendi. His professionalism, combined with his kindness, made him the perfect companion for this adventure. Dendi was extremely knowledgeable and knew the region inside out—he explained the culture, the peaks, and ensured we were adjusting well to the altitude. Every day was an adventure—crossing rivers, walking through thick forest trails, and climbing toward snow-covered landscapes. Sherpa Expedition’s planning was excellent. The flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was on time, the porters were friendly and hardworking, and the tea houses we stayed in were comfortable and offered surprisingly good food. Dendi checked our health daily, helped with gear issues, and created a supportive group atmosphere. When we finally reached base camp, the sheer beauty brought tears to my eyes. It felt like standing in the heart of nature. This was not just a trek, but an emotional and beautiful journey. I’m thankful to Dendi and the Sherpa Expedition team. I would absolutely recommend this company for anyone looking to experience the Himalayas.

My brother and I had a great trip to the Everest Base Camp. Together with Santa our very well informed gide, who took care of us in a fantastic way and gave us much information during the hike, and Gulzen our porter (who carried each day our two bags of 10kg each plus his own bag....unbelievable). We had a wonderful time in the beautiful Himalayas, it was a lifetime experience!
