Tsum Valley Trek – 9 Days is a short yet unforgettable Himalayan adventure designed for trekkers who have limited time but seek a deeply cultural and remote trekking experience. Organized by Sherpa Expedition, this trek takes you through one of Nepal’s most secluded valleys — the mystical Tsum Valley, nestled in the Manaslu region of the Nepal Himalayas.
The journey begins early in the morning with a scenic private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, which takes around 8 to 9 hours. This long drive winds through lush green hills, rivers, and small mountain settlements, giving you a visual taste of what lies ahead. Jagat serves as the trailhead for your trek, and it's where the real adventure begins.
On the next day, the trek officially starts as you make your way from Jagat to Lokpa. Lokpa, situated at 1,800 meters, marks the entrance to the restricted Tsum Valley region. This area is less visited and offers an unspoiled natural landscape filled with pine forests, waterfalls, and stunning views of Ganesh Himal.
The trail continues from Lokpa to Chumling, entering the Lower Tsum Valley. This stretch offers breathtaking Himalayan scenery and cultural immersion in traditional Tibetan-influenced villages. In Chumling, you’ll start to notice the unique architecture, prayer flags, and chortens that reflect the deep-rooted Buddhist culture of the valley.
Next, the trek ascends toward Chekanparo (also known as Chokhangparo), one of the most scenic villages in the Upper Tsum Valley. Located above 3,000 meters, this village offers incredible panoramic views of Shingri Himal and Ganesh Himal. It’s also home to ancient monasteries and sacred mani walls, making it a highlight of the trek.
From Chekanparo, you trek deeper into the heart of the valley to reach Nile and visit the renowned Mu Gompa — the largest and oldest monastery in the region, located at an altitude of 3,610 meters. Surrounded by Himalayan silence and snowy peaks, Mu Gompa provides a powerful spiritual atmosphere and insight into monastic life in this remote area.
After exploring Mu Gompa, the return journey begins by retracing the trail back to Chekanparo, then descending to Chumling, where the lower altitude brings a refreshing change. You'll continue down through Lokpa, enjoying familiar but always stunning views from a new perspective.
Eventually, you reach Jagat, where your trek officially ends. From here, a private jeep takes you back to Kathmandu, concluding your 9-day Tsum Valley Trek.
This trek is perfect for those seeking a short yet culturally rich and physically rewarding trek in Nepal. It combines raw natural beauty, ancient Tibetan culture, remote Himalayan landscapes, and spiritual tranquility — all in just over a week.
Whether you're a first-time trekker or a seasoned traveler looking for a new adventure, the Tsum Valley Trek is an ideal escape into one of Nepal’s best-kept secrets. With Sherpa Expedition managing all logistics, permits, and guiding, you can focus fully on the experience.
Start your adventure with a scenic and long drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, the gateway to the Tsum Valley. The drive passes through beautiful countryside, rivers, and terraced fields. Jagat is a small village where you’ll rest and prepare for the trek ahead.
Begin trekking through lush forests and small villages as you gradually ascend to Lokpa. The trail offers glimpses of rural life and terraced fields. Lokpa is a small settlement that serves as an entry point to the Manaslu Conservation Area.
The trail becomes more rugged and peaceful as you enter the Tsum Valley. Chumling is the largest village in Lower Tsum and a cultural hub with traditional stone houses and mani walls. Enjoy the tranquil Himalayan environment and Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Ascend deeper into the valley through alpine forests and past traditional villages. Chokhangparo offers spectacular views of Ganesh Himal and a close connection to local Buddhist monasteries. The atmosphere becomes more serene and remote.
Today’s trek takes you to Nile, the home of Mu Gompa (Mu Monastery), one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region. Experience spiritual vibes and panoramic views of Himalayan peaks while exploring this sacred place.
Begin your return journey by descending back to Chumling. The trail offers a different perspective of the valley, with lush forests and mountain vistas. Take time to soak in the cultural and natural beauty before continuing.
Retrace your steps as you descend to Lokpa. The trail moves through rhododendron forests and terraced farmland, providing chances to interact with locals and witness everyday rural life.
Complete your trekking loop by heading back to Jagat. The trail is easier downhill and crosses rivers and villages. Celebrate the successful trek with fellow trekkers during your last night in the mountains.
Drive back to Kathmandu, enjoying the changing landscapes from mountains to plains. Arrive in the city by evening, where the trek concludes. Use the rest of the day to relax or explore Kathmandu.
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
(Note our company guide will carry the medicines and first aid kits during the trek. However, we recommend you bring your personal first-aid kit as well)
The best time to trek Tsum Valley is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and excellent visibility of Ganesh Himal and surrounding peaks. Trails are dry, and the weather is stable, making it ideal for safe and scenic trekking experiences.
The Tsum Valley Trek is considered a moderate to challenging trek. The trail involves multiple ascents and descents through rugged terrain, forest paths, and narrow ridges. Altitudes range from 1,300 meters to over 3,600 meters, so physical fitness is important. Prior hiking experience is helpful but not mandatory with proper guidance.
To trek in Tsum Valley, two permits are mandatory: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits help preserve the region’s culture and environment. Only registered trekking agencies like Sherpa Expedition can obtain the RAP on your behalf, as solo trekking is not allowed.
The Tsum Valley is deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and known for its preserved traditions, ancient monasteries, and religious monuments. Villages like Chokhangparo, Nile, and Mu Gompa offer opportunities to witness daily monastic life, interact with locals, and see spiritual landmarks untouched by modernization.
Teahouse-style accommodation is available throughout the Tsum Valley Trek. Rooms are basic, typically with twin beds and shared bathrooms. Meals are homemade and include dal bhat, Tibetan bread, noodles, soups, and tea. While simple, they provide the energy needed for trekking in high-altitude terrain.
The highest point of the trek is Mu Gompa at around 3,610 meters, where the air is thinner. Acclimatization is naturally built into the itinerary with gradual ascents. Staying hydrated, walking at a steady pace, and paying attention to your body are crucial to prevent altitude sickness.
Essential items include trekking boots, warm layers, a down jacket, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Trekking poles and a sleeping bag are highly recommended. Sherpa Expedition provides rental gear such as sleeping bags, down jackets, and duffel bags if needed, helping lighten your packing load.

Tsum Valley is in the northern Gorkha District of Nepal, near the border with Tibet. It lies within the Manaslu Conservation Area and is known for its remote Himalayan culture, Tibetan Buddhist heritage, and stunning mountain views.
The 9-day version typically focuses on the lower and central parts of Tsum Valley, including Chumling, Chhokang Paro, and possibly Nile or Mu Gompa, depending on pace. While it doesn't cover the entire valley in-depth, it’s a great option for trekkers short on time who want a cultural and scenic experience.
The trek is considered moderate. While there are steep sections and high altitudes (up to around 3,700m / 12,140 ft), it does not require technical climbing. Good fitness and some prior trekking experience are helpful.

I signed up for the Annapurna Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition based on a friend’s recommendation, and now I can confidently say it was the best travel decision I’ve ever made. Our guide, Tshering, was truly special. Calm, experienced, and incredibly warm-hearted, he guided us through every step with confidence and care. What I admired most was how he made sure everyone in the group felt supported. Whether it was helping with altitude or simply offering a kind word during steep climbs, he was always there. The trek itself was stunning—every day revealed a new landscape and view. We trekked through rhododendron forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and finally reached the snow-filled amphitheater of Annapurna Base Camp. Sherpa Expedition managed all logistics perfectly—from flights to accommodation to delicious meals at the tea houses. Tshering taught us about the culture, pointed out peaks, and even made us laugh during the tough sections. The views from base camp were beyond anything I’ve ever seen—pure magic. I left Nepal with new friendships and a heart full of gratitude. Thank you, Tshering, and thank you, Sherpa Expedition, for an unforgettable experience.
Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Sherpa Expedition made the entire journey smooth and stress-free, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Dendi. His professionalism, combined with his kindness, made him the perfect companion for this adventure. Dendi was extremely knowledgeable and knew the region inside out—he explained the culture, the peaks, and ensured we were adjusting well to the altitude. Every day was an adventure—crossing rivers, walking through thick forest trails, and climbing toward snow-covered landscapes. Sherpa Expedition’s planning was excellent. The flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was on time, the porters were friendly and hardworking, and the tea houses we stayed in were comfortable and offered surprisingly good food. Dendi checked our health daily, helped with gear issues, and created a supportive group atmosphere. When we finally reached base camp, the sheer beauty brought tears to my eyes. It felt like standing in the heart of nature. This was not just a trek, but an emotional and beautiful journey. I’m thankful to Dendi and the Sherpa Expedition team. I would absolutely recommend this company for anyone looking to experience the Himalayas.
My brother and I had a great trip to the Everest Base Camp. Together with Santa our very well informed gide, who took care of us in a fantastic way and gave us much information during the hike, and Gulzen our porter (who carried each day our two bags of 10kg each plus his own bag....unbelievable). We had a wonderful time in the beautiful Himalayas, it was a lifetime experience!
