The Tsum Valley Trek is one of the most breathtaking and spiritually enriching journeys in the Himalayas, perfect for those who seek a remote adventure within a limited time frame. Organized by Sherpa Expedition, this short yet challenging trek allows trekkers to experience the untouched beauty of the Lower Tsum Valley and its deeply rooted Tibetan culture in just one week.
Located in the northern part of Nepal, near the border of Tibet, Tsum Valley is often referred to as the Hidden Valley of Happiness. Unlike the more commercial trekking regions of Nepal, this mystical valley remains secluded and serene, offering raw Himalayan landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
What makes the Tsum Valley Trek unique is its off-the-beaten-path charm. The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, taking you away from the bustling city and into the heart of the Himalayas. From there, the trail leads you through lush forests, picturesque villages, and dramatic mountain terrain, eventually reaching iconic spots like Chumling, Chekampar, and the sacred Mu Gompa.
Despite being a short trek, this route demands physical endurance, making it ideal for adventure seekers looking for a compact yet rewarding experience. Along the trail, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of majestic peaks such as Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, and Baudha Himal. The cultural encounters along the way are just as memorable — with warm-hearted locals, traditional Tibetan-style villages, and centuries-old Buddhist stupas and monasteries dotting the path.
One of the highlights of the Tsum Valley experience is the visit to Mu Gompa, the largest and most remote monastery in the region. Set against a backdrop of towering cliffs and snow-capped peaks, Mu Gompa exudes a sense of timelessness and spiritual depth that is rarely found elsewhere.
Unlike longer treks that require multiple weeks, this short Himalayan trek is perfectly tailored for those with limited time but an unlimited passion for nature and culture. Sherpa Expedition, with years of expertise in remote Himalayan trekking, ensures a well-organized and safe journey, complete with private transportation, local guides, and personalized support throughout the trip.
Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a curious traveler eager to explore Nepal's hidden trails, the Tsum Valley Trek offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to disconnect from modern chaos and reconnect with nature, tradition, and yourself.
So if you're short on time but craving a powerful Himalayan adventure, look no further. The Tsum Valley Trek promises challenge, culture, and incredible natural beauty — all packed into one unforgettable week.
Your adventure begins with a scenic private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, covering approximately 7-8 hours through diverse landscapes and picturesque villages. From Jagat, the trek starts uphill toward Philim, a traditional Gurung village nestled at 1,590 meters. This long but rewarding day offers the first glimpse of the untouched Tsum Valley, setting the tone for a memorable Himalayan journey.
The trail gradually ascends through dense forests and quaint settlements as you enter the Lower Tsum Valley. Today’s trek to Chumling at 2,390 meters immerses you in the valley’s rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the surrounding peaks, river crossings, and traditional mani walls, all reflecting the spiritual essence of the region.
As you climb higher into the Upper Tsum Valley, the terrain becomes more rugged and remote. Trekking to Chokhangparo at 3,010 meters, you’ll encounter ancient monasteries, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and friendly locals preserving centuries-old traditions. This shorter but steep trek deepens your connection with the valley’s mystical ambiance.
Today, you reach the spiritual heart of the trek: Nile and the famed Mu Gompa monastery at 3,361 meters. Mu Gompa is the largest monastery in the region and a center of Tibetan Buddhism. The journey offers panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, pristine valleys, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for reflection and exploration.
After soaking in the spiritual vibes of Mu Gompa, you begin your descent back to Chumling. This day’s trek lets you revisit the beautiful landscapes and cultural landmarks you saw earlier, offering new perspectives and photo opportunities along the way.
Retracing your steps through the Lower Tsum Valley, today you descend to Philim. The trail winds through forests, farmland, and traditional villages, providing a deeper understanding of local life and nature. This day is physically demanding but rewarding with ever-changing scenery.
On your final day, trek from Philim to Jagat, completing the loop through this beautiful valley. Once in Jagat, enjoy a private jeep ride back to Kathmandu, where your unforgettable Tsum Valley Trek adventure concludes. Reflect on your journey through Nepal’s hidden Himalayan paradise.
The following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek. It is important you do not forget the essential items, as this will determine your comfort and safety on the trek. Equally important is that you do not burden yourself with unnecessary equipment on the trek.
(Note our company guide will carry the medicines and first aid kits during the trek. However, we recommend you bring your personal first-aid kit as well)
The ideal seasons for the Tsum Valley Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the skies are clear, the mountain views are at their best, and the trails are dry and more accessible. These seasons also offer comfortable daytime temperatures and chilly but manageable nights. Monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain, which can make trails slippery, while winter months (December to February) are extremely cold and less ideal due to snow at higher altitudes.
Tsum Valley lies in a restricted zone of Nepal, which means trekkers must obtain a special permit issued by the Nepal government. Independent trekking is not allowed; you must be accompanied by a registered guide and travel through a government-authorized trekking agency. This restriction helps preserve the fragile environment and culture of the region, ensuring that the valley remains unspoiled and peaceful for future generations.
Although it’s a short trek in terms of days, the Tsum Valley Trek is considered moderately challenging due to its elevation, rugged terrain, and long daily walking hours. Trekkers should have a good level of physical fitness and some prior trekking experience. The trail involves steep ascents, descents, and narrow paths along cliffs and rivers. Altitude sickness is less of a concern compared to higher Himalayan routes, but proper acclimatization is still important.
Tsum Valley is deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, and many of the villages still follow ancient traditions and spiritual practices. Visitors are encouraged to be respectful of local customs. Always walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls, avoid wearing revealing clothing, and ask for permission before taking photographs of people or religious sites. Respecting these practices helps maintain a positive connection between visitors and local communities.
Unlike some popular trekking routes in Nepal, accommodation in Tsum Valley is relatively basic. Tea houses provide simple rooms, usually with twin beds and shared bathrooms. Meals are freshly prepared and include traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (rice and lentils), as well as Tibetan-style noodles, soups, and bread. The food is nourishing and suitable for high-altitude trekking, but options are limited, especially in the more remote villages.
The highest point on the Tsum Valley Trek is around 3,700 meters at Mu Gompa. While this is not extremely high compared to other Himalayan treks, it’s still important to pace yourself and stay hydrated to avoid altitude-related issues. Spending an extra night at mid-altitude locations like Chekampar or Chule helps the body adjust and reduces the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
The journey to Tsum Valley begins with a long but scenic private jeep drive from Kathmandu to Jagat, which takes about 7 to 8 hours. From Jagat, the trekking route winds through lush hills and valleys into the culturally rich Tsum region. After completing the circuit up to Mu Gompa, trekkers return via the same trail back to Jagat, followed by a drive back to Kathmandu. The round trip is well-organized and provides a full immersion into the Himalayan landscape in just one week.

The highest point on this trek is Mu Gompa, located at around 3,700 meters (12,140 feet). While this altitude is not extremely high, trekkers should still be cautious and allow their bodies time to adjust to avoid altitude-related issues.

No. Trekking in Tsum Valley is not allowed without a registered guide and a government-authorized trekking agency. This is a rule set by the Nepal government due to the area's restricted status and remote nature.

I signed up for the Annapurna Base Camp trek with Sherpa Expedition based on a friend’s recommendation, and now I can confidently say it was the best travel decision I’ve ever made. Our guide, Tshering, was truly special. Calm, experienced, and incredibly warm-hearted, he guided us through every step with confidence and care. What I admired most was how he made sure everyone in the group felt supported. Whether it was helping with altitude or simply offering a kind word during steep climbs, he was always there. The trek itself was stunning—every day revealed a new landscape and view. We trekked through rhododendron forests, past rivers and waterfalls, and finally reached the snow-filled amphitheater of Annapurna Base Camp. Sherpa Expedition managed all logistics perfectly—from flights to accommodation to delicious meals at the tea houses. Tshering taught us about the culture, pointed out peaks, and even made us laugh during the tough sections. The views from base camp were beyond anything I’ve ever seen—pure magic. I left Nepal with new friendships and a heart full of gratitude. Thank you, Tshering, and thank you, Sherpa Expedition, for an unforgettable experience.
Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Sherpa Expedition made the entire journey smooth and stress-free, and a huge part of that was thanks to our guide, Dendi. His professionalism, combined with his kindness, made him the perfect companion for this adventure. Dendi was extremely knowledgeable and knew the region inside out—he explained the culture, the peaks, and ensured we were adjusting well to the altitude. Every day was an adventure—crossing rivers, walking through thick forest trails, and climbing toward snow-covered landscapes. Sherpa Expedition’s planning was excellent. The flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was on time, the porters were friendly and hardworking, and the tea houses we stayed in were comfortable and offered surprisingly good food. Dendi checked our health daily, helped with gear issues, and created a supportive group atmosphere. When we finally reached base camp, the sheer beauty brought tears to my eyes. It felt like standing in the heart of nature. This was not just a trek, but an emotional and beautiful journey. I’m thankful to Dendi and the Sherpa Expedition team. I would absolutely recommend this company for anyone looking to experience the Himalayas.
My brother and I had a great trip to the Everest Base Camp. Together with Santa our very well informed gide, who took care of us in a fantastic way and gave us much information during the hike, and Gulzen our porter (who carried each day our two bags of 10kg each plus his own bag....unbelievable). We had a wonderful time in the beautiful Himalayas, it was a lifetime experience!
